We Must Cultivate Our Gardens

At the end of Voltaire's book, Candide returns to his small estate and organizes his life according to the simple principle that happiness is to be found in cultivating the land, relationships, and talents that surround him. His wife discovers she has a flair for pastry making and the monk discovers he is a good carpenter. Candide concludes that in order to obtain happiness "We must cultivate our garden".

Read a book. Learn something new. Discover your hidden talents. Do something you enjoy doing. This garden begins in the mind, but it does not end there. The duty to cultivate passes, as well as other interactions, to the recognition of common bonds with family, community, nation, our planet, and every living thing upon it.
